FREE THINKING BULL ON THE LOOSE
Beauregard Town has mascot

Spanish Town has its flamingos. Now Beauregard Town has its bull.
A smoke-spewing, music-playing, four-wheeled bull built by a local musician has become a favorite inside joke of the downtown neighborhood and a featured attraction of festivals and second line Mardi Gras parades throughout the area.
“We target people who could really appreciate it,” said Michael Feduccia, the Beauregard Town resident who created the bull.
“I think that is just kind of the essence of what Beauregard Town is all about. We’re free-thinkers.”
The bull has paraded the Court of St. Anne and Frenchmen Street parades in New Orleans and participated in special events ranging from the Voodoo Music Fest and “San Fermin in Nueva Orleans Running of the Bulls” (think Pamplona, but with roller derby girls) to his neighborhood National Night Out Against Crime.
YouTube and MySpace are filled with pictures and videos of people of all ages going bonkers for the bull.
“One woman told me she blew out a flip-flop and a bra strap from following that bull around,” Feduccia said.
Feduccia cooked up the idea for the bull on Valentine’s Day 2007.
A few days earlier he had participated in one of New Orleans’ “second line” parades and wanted something that played music and he could push for the next go-round.
He called up buddy Bill Holliday who had the tools to build such a beast.
Working from the idea of a pushable music box, they took a shopping cart and affixed speakers and sound board, from which they could play pre-recorded music or hook up their own microphones and instruments.
A generator was added to the belly of the cart to supply power. Not until after they covered the whole thing with sheet metal did they realize it somewhat resembled a bull.
Smoking horns and a fleur-de-lis exhaust were added for effect.
“I just like the spontaneity and improv of it,” Feduccia said. “It’s definitely a ‘good times’ kind of thing.”

October 1st, 2007This past Friday was the 15th Anniversary ride for Critical Mass. Critical Mass: Baton Rouge’s Bicycling Defiant Celebration. It was spectacular. There was 120 + people, mostly free spirited open minded individuals. We cruised all over town, yelling and cutting up. It had been a few years since I took part in Critical Mass. It has really grown, and currently has a good group of people involved.
I can’t wait for next month. It’s the last Friday of each month and we meet under the LSU Clock Tower at 5:30.
